Flic en Flac is Mauritius’ second most popular tourist area. Located in the Black River district on the western coast, this area has the nicest of the island’s beaches. The beaches in Flic en Flac are protected by coral reefs as well as from the wind by a nearby mountainous range.

The name Flic en Flac comes from the Dutch phrase “Fried Landt Flaak” that translates as Free and Flat Land. Originally a tiny fishing village, it wasn’t until the 1960’s that tourists began noticing this area.

Unlike the northern area of Grand Bay that experienced wild and uncontrolled growth to meet the needs of tourists, Flic en Flac closely monitored all growth and construction. At first few large hotels were allowed to build as the area was still thriving on sugar and textile exports. When these industries started to lose momentum the authorities finally allowed Flic en Flac to attract more tourist dollars by allowing large scale resorts and hotels to be built.

Today Flic en Flac is a well appointed area that has retained much of its natural beauty while still providing world class services and amenities to tourists. One can find clean beaches with a wide array of water sports, banks, supermarkets, nightlife, bars, small casinos and more while still maintaining a peaceful and quiet atmosphere for relaxation.

Diving and snorkeling are popular activities in Flic en Flac. The nearby coral reef provides stunning diving opportunities and the clear waters are perfect for snorkeling. The Sea Urchin Diving Center is a great place to earn your diving certification or just to rent equipment for a lazy afternoon.

In addition, excursions to Chamarel to see the Seven Colored Earth are very popular. This unusual geological formation has yet to be fully explained but visitors are treated to a lunar like landscape that is comprised of multicolored earth.

Pamplemousse Garden is a wonderful botanical garden that is located closer to Port Louis, and the Black River Gorge National Park provides another opportunity for exploring the rich geography of the area. Hiking through the park you’ll see verdant valleys, monkeys, waterfalls, beautiful flowers and more.

Vacationing in Flic en Flac is perfect for families and those who aren’t in pursuit of wild, party vacations. Relaxation while surrounded by natural beauty, pristine beaches, turquoise waters and exemplary local hospitality is what Flic en Flac provides tourists.
